Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA)
At Orthopedic Centers of Colorado – Cornerstone Orthopaedics, our trained physical therapy professionals utilize Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) to uncover the root cause of pain and movement dysfunction—going beyond just treating symptoms.
SFMA is a comprehensive, movement-based diagnostic system designed to identify faulty movement patterns and reveal how seemingly unrelated areas of the body may be contributing to pain or limitation. This concept, known as regional interdependence, acknowledges that dysfunction in one region—such as the hips or spine—can often influence symptoms in another area, like the shoulder or knee.
Performed by clinicians who have completed advanced Level I training, SFMA breaks down complex movements into individual segments through a structured, repeatable assessment. This allows us to clearly distinguish between mobility and stability issues, and tailor rehabilitation plans to address the underlying source of dysfunction.
SFMA can be applied to patients of all ages and activity levels—from athletes with performance limitations to individuals recovering from injury. With this deeper insight, we’re able to deliver more targeted, effective treatment that helps you move better, feel better, and prevent future injury.
